Fall 2018 Tournaments in Ottawa

Lisgar CI is running Lisgar Novice on Saturday, November 10, 2018. This will use the new SCOP Novice set in a Canadian edition. It is a novice tournament, so all players must be in grade 9 or 10 or else playing in their first quizbowl tournament.

Lisgar Novice should run from 9:00 to 4:00. It costs $40, with some discounts for small teams. Ruth Crabtree is directing, and you should contact her for questions or registration. You can also contact me if you need me to give you her email address.

With ONQBA and the Carleton U club, I will be running Carleton Sublunary Tournament on Saturday, December 1, 2018. We will to use a NAQT Intro-IS set (edit: IS-178A) in Canadian edition. This is not a novice tournament, and it is open to high-school teams of any kind.

This tournament will cost $50, with a discount of $10 for teams that register before November 19. Like I did for my last few tournaments, I’ll try to run it with a short schedule (7 or 8 rounds, timed with clocks), and then I’ll hand out paper copies of any rounds we don’t get to.

We will start at 10:00 AM on the Carleton campus that day. You should register or ask questions by emailing me,

This post was copied from my announcement on the quizbowl forums.

Update: The Carleton tournament is the day after Glebe Trivia Night. That’s a trivia event on Friday, November 30, at Glebe CI at 7:00 PM. Teams of 4 players and free agents. $5 for students and $10 for adults, ticket sales at the door.

Field update on November 26: For Carleton Sublunary, I have early registrations from Bell (early), 2x Lisgar (early), and 3x Colonel By (early) and Glebe. I have also heard interest from a school in Toronto, and in more teams from Lisgar or Colonel By. I will keep updating this post with the field.

    1. Heh, I am also waiting for this! I have talked to McMaster leaders within the past week, they are still keen to run it, but I have not heard a date. I’ll post as soon as I know.

  1. I can now say that MacIntro or similar won’t happen in 2018. ONQBA folks have been talking to some university clubs about hosting HS tournaments in early 2019.

We follow the model that tournaments are always hosted by school clubs, as with college QB and house-Reach, so the role of ONQBA is just secondary support. ONQBA doesn’t have the physical space to run tournaments without a partner school, and we also don’t have a treasury to collect entry fees. I apologize for how that can make the schedule a little unpredictable from year to year.
